Although French artist and book illustrator André Collot (1897-1976) created some very romantic and soft impressions of couples having sex, he is best known for images like the ones we have selected for this exhibit.
Almost every image seems to scream rape and most of us will turn away from these depictions. Yet, fantasies about rape are most common amongst humans, according to many studies.
It’s the prerogative of the artist to visualize his fantasies and his duty to confront us. If we still look away from these images it may be because we do not like to be confronted with the darker parts of our inner selves — or we find it hard to separate fantasy from reality in our media controlled environment.
